ABA, or Applied Behavior Analysis, focuses on the relationship between environmental factors and the behavior. During assessment we look for why the behavior is happening or what skills may be needed for a skill to be learned. We then look at the environment and see what we can work on in order to end with a meaningful change.
Touch of Kindness focuses on parent training; I will meet with parents/caregivers and teach different strategies that can be used in the home or in the community in order to decrease behaviors, increase skills, or assist with other issues that occur. Strategies could include different verbiage to be used, visuals to help with multi-step tasks, reinforcement strategies and much more.
Receiving therapy is a step in the right direction, but implementing the strategies outside session is the most crucial. What I ask from my families I work with, is consistency.
Consistency is key to ABA; the strategies and knowledge you gain are not solely for a one time deal, or for only one caregiver to be using. We all need to be on the same page and practice what is learned in order to help maintain you and your family's progress.
